How many pieces? A starting guide by age

Puzzle guides give slightly different numbers, so treat these as approximate starting points. Begin a little easier than you think your child needs. Finishing a puzzle builds confidence, and you can move up once it feels comfortable.

  • Start with a few pieces, such as the corners or the edges, and let your child place the rest.
  • Offer a hint rather than a solution: turn a piece, or point to the area it belongs in.
  • Keep sessions short and stop while it is still fun.
  • Put the pieces back in the box or on the board every time so none go missing.
