This 60x–120x handheld microscope for kids turns leaves, fabric, paper, food surfaces and prepared specimens into close-up discoveries. Its compact body can be held over an object, while separate zoom and focus controls help young explorers adjust the view.

How to focus the pocket microscope

1. Place a flat, still specimen on a stable surface or position the microscope carefully over the object.
2. Start at the lower 60x setting so it is easier to find the area you want to inspect.
3. Bring the clear viewing end close to the specimen without pressing hard against it.
4. Turn the focus wheel slowly until the details become clearer.
5. Increase the zoom gradually towards 120x, then adjust the focus again.
6. Use the LED only when more illumination is needed.

What can kids inspect?

Start with dry, stationary objects that have visible patterns and texture. Good first subjects include:

• Leaf veins, petals and dry seed surfaces
• Paper fibres, cardboard and printed dots
• Cotton, denim, wool and other fabric weaves
• Salt, sugar, flour and dry food surfaces on a clean tray
• Feathers or shed insect wings collected without harming wildlife
• Prepared specimens from the optional 12-slide set

Ask children to compare two samples: Which has straighter lines? Which looks rougher? What changes between 60x and 120x? Observation notes or simple drawings can turn a quick look into a small science activity.

The separate specimen-slides option contains a box labelled with 12 kinds of prepared samples. The visible labels include examples such as butterfly wing, locust wing, sheep hair, goldfish scale, dandelion fluff, lily pollen, potato starch and celery leaf.

Because the slides are sold as their own selector option, they should not be described as included with Blue, White or Yellow unless Toys4us later creates a clearly labelled bundle.

Power, care and safety

• The built-in LED requires batteries. The Toys4us page does not confirm the type or quantity, so check the delivered battery compartment or instruction sheet before purchase or installation.
• An adult should install and replace batteries, follow the polarity marks, use a matched set and secure the compartment before use.
• Never look at the sun, lasers, very bright lamps or another person’s eyes through the microscope.
• Use only dry specimens unless the delivered instructions explicitly approve another preparation method. Keep liquid away from the LED, controls and battery compartment.
• Handle prepared slides gently over a table. Stop using any slide that is chipped, cracked or damaged.
• Use the wrist strap while walking, but do not wear it around the neck or take it into bed or any sleep space.
• Wipe the body with a soft dry cloth. Clean the lens only with suitable lens tissue; do not use household spray cleaners.
• The current page gives conflicting age guidance of 3+ and 6–12 years. Follow the age and warning label supplied with the selected option.
