Add to cart

A Montessori-inspired wooden spelling game where children match a picture to a word and build it with letter cubes. Each card shows an object and its printed word. Your child says the word slowly, finds the letter cubes, lines them up and checks the answer against the card. It is screen-free, easy to set up on a table and works for solo play, parent-and-child play or a small supervised group. Suggested for ages 3 and up.

How the wooden spelling game works

The game turns early spelling into a short, hands-on puzzle. There is no worksheet and no screen: the card gives the picture, the printed word gives a way to check, and the cubes let a child try, look and correct.

  1. Choose a picture card and place it where your child can see it.
  2. Say the word together, slowly, and listen for each sound.
  3. Find the letter cubes that match the sounds and put them in order.
  4. Compare the cubes with the printed word on the card to check the spelling.
  5. With the bell set, ring the bell when the word is complete.

Start small: begin with the three-letter words in the set, such as pin, dog, red or sun, then move on to four-letter words such as pear, milk, gate or duck.

Play and learning ideas

The game gives children plenty of chances to practise letters, sounds and vocabulary in a relaxed way. It does not guarantee any learning outcome, but it makes a practical start for early readers.

Picture to word

Match one card at a time and say each word out loud before building it.

Sound it out

Say the word slowly and choose one cube for each sound, from the first letter to the last.

Turn-taking

In a small group, take turns drawing a card and building the word while the others watch.

Gift for a young learner

The compact set is easy to wrap and store, which makes it a useful birthday or preschool gift.

Care and safety

  • Suggested for ages 3 and up. Keep all cubes, cards and the bell away from children under three and from children who mouth toys.
  • Supervise play, because the set has several small loose pieces.
  • Inspect the cubes for splinters, cracks or flaking print before each session, and stop using any piece that is damaged.
  • Count the cubes, cards and bell before and after play so nothing goes missing.
  • Wipe the wooden pieces with a soft, slightly damp cloth and dry them straight away. Do not soak them.
  • Store the cards dry and flat to keep the corners from bending.

Frequently asked questions

What comes in the wooden word spelling game?

The set has 16 wooden letter cubes and 40 picture-word cards. Choose the version with a bell or without a bell.

What age is this wooden spelling game for?

We suggest ages 3 and up. It works best for children who are beginning to connect sounds, letters and simple words. Keep the pieces away from children under three.

How do children use the letter cubes and word cards?

They choose a card, say the pictured word, find the matching letter cubes and place them in order. The printed word on the card lets them check their own spelling.

Does it include three- and four-letter words?

Yes. The product photos show a mix of three-letter and four-letter words, including pin, dog, red, sun, pear, milk, gate and duck.

What is the difference between the bell and no-bell sets?

Both are complete spelling games. The bell set adds a hand bell that a child can ring when a word is finished. The no-bell set is better for quiet play.

Is it an official Montessori material?

It is Montessori-inspired because it uses hands-on matching and lets children check their own work. It is not an official Montessori classroom material and the term is not a safety certification.

Can it be used at preschool or in a small group?

Yes. Children can take turns choosing cards and building words with an adult supervising. Count every piece after the activity.

Will it teach my child to read?

No toy can promise that. The game gives children practice with letters, sounds and simple words, and works best alongside reading together every day.

How do I clean the wooden pieces?

Use a soft, slightly damp cloth and dry the wood straight away. Do not soak the pieces or use strong cleaners.

This one works well as a take-turns game: one of you picks a card, the other finds the letters, and then you switch.
