Draw a track and the robot follows it
Draw a thick black line on white paper, switch this mini robot on and place it on the line. A sensor underneath reads the line and steers the robot along every loop and bend, so the drawing works as the controller. There is no app to install and no screen to set up.
Change the track and the robot follows the new route straight away. It is a simple, hands-on way for kids to see cause and effect while they draw, test and redraw.
Quick facts
- Designs: Blue Penguin, Black Penguin, Yellow Robot, Orange Robot or Blue Robot. Each order is for one robot.
- In the box: 1 robot, 1 instruction sheet and 1 induction pen.
- Batteries: uses button-cell batteries, which are not included. An adult should fit them.
- Suggested age: 5 years and over. Not suitable for children under 3.
- You also need: white paper and a flat table.
- Delivery: shipped within Australia. See delivery and returns.
Button battery safety: button batteries can cause serious injury if swallowed. An adult should fit and replace the batteries and keep spare and used batteries out of children's reach. If you think a battery has been swallowed, call the Poisons Information Centre on 13 11 26 or go to a hospital emergency department straight away. Do not let the child eat or drink, and do not try to make them vomit.
Why kids keep playing with it
The drawing is the toy
Every new line is a new track. Kids can erase, redraw and see how one small change to a corner changes the way the robot moves.
Mistakes are easy to spot and fix
If the robot drives off the route, the question is obvious: is the line too thin, is the corner too sharp, or is there a gap? The next drawing becomes a quick experiment.
Easy to start, easy to level up
Begin with one big loop. Once that works, add bends, landmarks and a finish point and see if the robot completes the course.
Small enough for a table
This is a small toy, so a sheet of paper on a kitchen table or desk is all the space it needs. Keep the robot, pen and instructions together for a quick setup next time.
Set up your first route
-
Prepare the surface. Put clean white paper on a flat, dry table. Keep the sheet smooth so raised edges do not block the wheels.
-
Draw a clear line. Use the supplied induction pen or a thick dark marker. Aim for a line about 6 mm (¼ inch) wide.
-
Start with easy turns. Draw a wide loop with gentle bends. Save tight corners and crossings for later.
-
Switch the robot on. An adult should check the batteries are fitted correctly, then use the switch on the robot.
-
Place it on the line. Set the robot down with its underside sensor directly over the dark line and give it a moment to pick up the route.
-
Redraw if needed. If it wanders off, thicken faint sections, close small gaps and make sharp corners wider.
If the drawn line ends, the robot may keep travelling in the direction it was heading. Draw a closed loop and keep the course well away from the table edge.
Easy route ideas
Paper town delivery
Draw a road between a home, school, park and shop. Give the robot a delivery mission and ask your child to design a route that reaches every stop.
Wide-loop challenge
Start with a circle, then try an oval, a figure eight and a gentle zigzag. Which shape does the robot follow most smoothly?
Find and fix the gap
Leave one small break in the route and see what happens. Let your child find the problem and repair it with the marker.
Design together
One child draws while another tests the robot. Swap roles after each run and talk about what to change.
If the robot does not follow the line
| What happens | What to check |
|---|---|
| The robot ignores the route | Check the power is on, the batteries are fitted correctly and the sensor is sitting directly over a dark line. |
| It keeps leaving the line | Make the route darker and thicker, close any gaps and replace sharp corners with wider curves. |
| It struggles on the paper | Flatten the sheet and move it to a firm, level surface. Avoid carpet, textured paper and glossy or reflective backgrounds. |
| Movement is slow or inconsistent | Switch the toy off and ask an adult to check the batteries, wheels and sensor area. Replace weak batteries with the same type. |
| It keeps going after the route ends | This can happen when the line stops. Draw a closed loop and keep the course away from the table edge. |

Safety and batteries
- Button batteries need an adult. An adult should fit, replace and store the batteries. Keep new, spare and used batteries away from children, and keep the battery compartment closed.
- Swallowed battery? Call the Poisons Information Centre on 13 11 26 or go to a hospital emergency department straight away. Do not let the child eat or drink, and do not try to make them vomit.
- Age. Suggested for ages 5 and over. This toy is not suitable for children under 3. Supervise younger children and follow any age marking on the packaging.
- Use a stable surface. Keep the route away from table edges, liquids, stairs and places where the toy could fall.
- Switch it off after play. Remove the batteries for longer storage.
- Clean gently. Turn the toy off and wipe it with a soft, dry cloth. Do not put it in water.
- Protect your surfaces. Draw on paper. Dark markers can stain furniture, floors and fabric.

Frequently asked questions
What age is the line-following robot for?
We suggest it for children aged 5 and over. It is not suitable for children under 3 because it uses button batteries. An adult should fit the batteries and supervise younger children.
Are batteries included?
No. The robot uses button-cell batteries, which are not included. An adult should fit them. Have them ready so your child can start playing straight away.
What do I draw with?
Use the induction pen that comes in the box, or a thick dark marker. Draw a continuous line about 6 mm (¼ inch) wide on white paper. If the robot wanders, make the line thicker rather than pressing harder.
Does the robot follow any drawing?
It follows a thick, continuous dark line on a light background. Pale colours, broken lines, tight corners and shiny or patterned surfaces can be hard for the sensor to read.
Is this a coding robot?
No. There is no app and no programming. The child draws the route and the robot follows it, which makes it a simple, hands-on cause-and-effect toy.
What comes in the box? Do I get all five designs?
You get one robot in the design you select, plus 1 instruction sheet and 1 induction pen. Photos with several robots show the range of designs, not a set. Batteries and paper are not included.
Can it be used on the floor?
Paper on a smooth, flat table works best. Avoid carpet and rough flooring, and do not draw directly on household surfaces, because markers can stain and the sensor may not read the route reliably.
How long does delivery take?
Orders are usually dispatched within 2 to 4 business days, and standard shipping generally takes about 2 to 4 business days to most destinations in Australia. Shipping is calculated at checkout, and you receive a tracking number once your order is dispatched.
What if the robot arrives faulty or damaged?
Contact us at info@toys4us.au straight away. We will arrange a replacement or a full refund, including return shipping costs, as set out in our return and refund policy.
Ready to start drawing?
Choose your favourite penguin or robot in the selector above, check the selected design and add it to your cart. Remember that button-cell batteries are not included, so have them ready for an adult to fit.
